To accomplish these goals, he is repurposing “an unsuspecting piece of technology — a smartwatch.” The smartwatches would be worn by autistic students and set to vibrate. Teachers can send discreet text message notifications to those students during the school day, prompting a socially-based action. The idea is to encourage social participation in class via a smartwatch.
Yes:
It has potential for out-of-classroom uses. Reminders for the student to step out and take a bathroom break every few hours, head for their counseling session, or not miss the bus would be useful.

Used in a voluntary, not mandated, capacity, there is also the potential for executive functioning assistance with academics tasks. Reminders for deadlines, homework, studying, group participation, or extracurricular events could be helpful.
