Joe Biden’s op-ed today kept me in bed for two hours longer than I’d otherwise have stayed there. Rather, the news of the op-ed did; I didn’t even read it for myself until just now—it’s even more inexplicable than I’d thought.

While I do not believe federal dollars should go to police departments violating people’s rights or turning to violence as the first resort, I do not support defunding police. The better answer is to give police departments the resources they need to implement meaningful reforms, and to condition other federal dollars on completing those reforms.

This is remarkably mealy-mouthed nonsense, in that it both throws more money at the cops supposedly to implement ideas we’ve already been trying for decades and also (wait for it) defunds the police if they don’t make prescribed changes.

I can’t for the life of me understand how any person or group of people could write that paragraph without any sense of shame.
