Dying to hear what indieweb folks think of the new Jack Dorsey plan to “develop an open and decentralized standard for social media” with “Twitter to ultimately be a client of this standard”. Dorsey claims the effort intends “not only to develop a decentralized standard for social media, but to also build open community around it, inclusive of companies & organizations, researchers, civil society leaders”. Is this Twitter embracing the indieweb, or coopting, or something else?

Darius Kazemi (of Run Your Own Social) cites work on ActivityPub: “I hear Twitter wants to invest in creating a new decentralized social media protocol, meanwhile a bunch of us are out here already doing the hard work.”
Agrawal, however, is dismissive of “[t]he traditionally slow and deliberate consensus-building approach to evolving standards”.

Anil Dash joins the chorus: “Don’t develop it, invest in the efforts that exist. Have the courage to listen to the community first this time.” Tim Chambers urges Twitter to join Mastodon “just to reach out and evangelize to that community as well and bring in insights of those who are already in depth” on existing standards.
