Joe Biden’s allies admit he’s not prepared to be President of the United States. This is the only possible conclusion to draw from their suggestion that he scale back his public events and campaign activities in order to “limit the verbal flubs”. Here’s the thing: they are not verbal flubs, they are mental ones.
Biden has a tendency to make the blunders late in the day, his allies say, particularly after a long swing on the road, like he had last week in Iowa. They say something needs to be done to give the candidate more down time as the campaign intensifies in the fall.
In just a single week he said that “poor kids are just as bright and just as talented as white kids”, that Democrats “believe in truth not facts”, that Theresa May’s name was “Margaret Thatcher”, and that “those kids in Parkland came up to see me when I was vice president”.
If he can’t handle the relatively modest pace and low-intensity push of this stage of the Democratic primary, how are we supposed to believe that he can handle the daily rigor of, you know, being President of the United States?
These are his allies talking to reporters about this, and the rest of us are just supposed to pretend there isn’t a serious issue here?
