Here’s how switching to Kindle has changed my reading habits: I went from maybe a few books per year to around thirty books per year. So far this year I’ve somehow managed to read forty-three.
Most of this is due to being able to carry both a fiction and a nonfiction read around more easily than when I’d had to carry paperbacks or hardcovers around in a shoulder bag or backpack; my Kindle fits in a pocket on my cargo pants. It’s also helped that unlike paper books where the pages don’t fit still in a flat plane, I can read the Kindle when on public transit despite the movement of the bus or train without it prompting motion sickness. It all adds up to having more opportunities to read than I had before I made the switch.
As for more mindful reading, how do I “think about what [I’m] reading and digest it”? Similar to the way I blog about reading the web, of course: I highlight passages in the books I’m reading. In a sense, the “mindfulness” comes from introducing friction.
